Samoan Language Week is celebrated annually for one week, starting from the end of May to the beginning of June. Samoan Language Week, also known as Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa, is an annual celebration in New Zealand that promotes the use of the Samoan language and celebrates Samoan culture. It provides an opportunity for all New Zealanders to learn about and appreciate the richness of Samoan language and heritage.
We celebrated Samoan Language week with our Tamariki at our Centre. It was an amazing learning experience to acknowledge the Samoan culture. Throughout the week we were busy doing different activities and experiences.
Kaiako took the special mat time to share knowledge about the Samoan language and culture by using the special resources. We introduced Samoan greetings to children “Hello” (Talofa lava), “Goodbye” (Tofa), “Thank you” (Faafetai), “Sorry” (Malie) and “Please” (Faamolemole). It was great opportunity for them to learn and gain knowledge about the Samoan culture. We also introduced some new Samoan songs during our mat time.
We also arranged a trip to the Takanini library where they have been engaged by various activities like story time, singing and dancing on Samoan songs. We appreciate the effort from Leilani’s family to do cooking with our children. Big thanks to Leilani’s Mum and Dad.
