June 2024 Matariki signals the Māori new year and the appearance of Matariki heralds, a time of remembrance, joy, and peace. It is a time for communities to come together and celebrate.
To celebrate Matariki, we had a range of activities for it, such as making stars, Korowai, weaving te Whäriki, singing waiata, marae collage, poi dance and invited Indu Bajwa from Youthline club to further our children’s learning with Matariki activities. We also invited Gaylene/Poppy/Nicola Jean mum to share her culture by reading a book about Matariki. She also engaged our children by singing Waiata.
What learning has occurred: Our children showed their belonging, contribution, participation, creative thinking and imagination through these activities. They develop their mana and Manaakitanga through above learning experiences. New Zealand ECE curriculum Te Whariki pointed out: All cultural groups have beliefs, traditions, and child-rearing practices that place value on specific knowledge, skills, attitudes and dispositions.
