On Friday 12th April we celebrated Vaisakhi and Eid al-Fitr festivals at our Centre. Vaisakhi is seen as a spring harvest celebration primarily in Punjab and Northern India. Eid al-Fitr is celebrated by Muslims to mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
To celebrate we asked our parents to dress up the children in their cultural outfits. Also invited parents to do some cooking with our children. Children enjoyed eating after cooking alongside the parents. We played Indian/Punjabi music. Children danced along with their teachers who were also dressed up in Indian cultural clothes. Teachers put some Heena on children’s hands as a part of Eid al-Fitr celebration. Also participated in art and craft activities.
The children really enjoyed the whole celebration as it allowed them the opportunity build their relationships with their peers and develop their social interaction and communication skills.
LEARNING OCCURRED: Through celebrating these special events children’s intercultural learning been promoted which encourage children to be curious about the lives of others. Children developed a deeper understanding of Vaisakhi and Eid al-Fitr, further developed their fine-motor, social interaction and communication skills as well as their physical development, gained control of their own bodies while they danced.
